Education Experience and Achievements
Member (and Chair) of AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB panels for the accreditation of Business Schools both internationally and nationally.
Mentor for an Australian School which successfully achieved AACSB accreditation in 2016.
Member (and chair) of OU Validation Services panels for UK and international institutions.
Hosted & organised the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) annual conference in Edinburgh 1999.
Secured a major donation of $500K from Ford Motor Company, via its Chairman, Lord Trotman, to improve internal facilities for the Management School at Edinburgh in 1999, developing an ‘Electronic Portal’: MIRACLE (Management Information and Research Access Centre and Learning Environment).
As Deputy Director of OPTIMA, currently developing a programme for providing optical medical imaging science PhD students with a grounding in innovation and entrepreneurship, in order to address the translation problem (the gap between research and application: from the laboratory to the bedside).
Initiated the development of a major new e-learning MBA programme, building on research interests in innovation and technology implementation, as well as experience in management education in order to extend Edinburgh’s portfolio and international exposure.
Led the development of innovative project-based Edinburgh courses—some 10 in all—in operations, technology (including IT) and innovation at all levels from first year to masters, from 1986 to 2004.
Extensive external examining and assessment experience at UG, Masters, PhD & general school levels, including Birmingham; Brunel; LSE; Newcastle; OU; Southampton; Sussex; Trinity College Dublin; UMIST and Lyons II, France.
Developed a distinctive pedagogic philosophy based on action learning for management education, through research and teaching trials including e-learning methods.
PhD Supervisor for Paul Drayson, now Lord Drayson, and formerly Minister for Science and Innovation in BIS in the Blair and Brown Labour government.
